Youth Groups gather for a Car Wash to benefit Youth Ministries

Saturday, October 4th was a busy Saturday as the Scrap Metal Drive and Rummage Sale provided many cars for the Youth Group Car Wash!  Under the direction of Maria Moore and Ginny Wagner the youth pulled out the hoses, soap, sponges and brushes and towels to wash and polish those who brought metal and shopped the rummage sale.  Thanks to our youth for their energy, enthusiasm and willingness to help with their youth budget!

Get Ready for FrightFest at Six Flags Great Adventure!  Yes, we are going to FrightFest at Six Flags Great Adventure on Saturday, October 25^th.  We will leave the church parking lot at 6:30am and will return at approximately 10pm.  If you want to go, sign up on the Youth Ministry bulletin board! If you easily scare, don't come on this special event!

Youth Ministry Committee seeks members, teachers and coordinator for 2009 REACH Workcamp...  This fall is a time of transition for the Youth Ministry program at our church.  In an effort to ensure the continuity of this vital mission of our church, we are looking for additional committee members, individuals willing to teach 2-3 week modules (curriculum and training provided) for middle or high school youth and a coordinator for the 2009 REACH Workcamp to Niagara Falls, New York from July 3 – July 11.  Please speak to Pat Hubbard about any of these opportunities to serve your church.  Leave a message at 288-6807 or call 845-754-4745.

Youth Ministry Updates...

The Youth Ministry Committee welcomes Karen Diers!  Karen has been an active youth group member for six years and now as a college student has agreed to serve on the Youth Ministry Committee.  Welcome Karen!  Special thanks to Meg Baird and Lisa Finn for their continued commitment to the Youth Ministry program.  In addition to teaching the middle and high school church school classes, they also provide leadership for youth group activities.  Thanks Meg and Lisa!  

Welcome to the 2008 Confirmation Class! 

On Sunday, June 1st, the nine members of this year’s Confirmation Class were confirmed during the 10:00 am worship service.  At the May meeting of the Session, all nine confirmands read their Faith Statements to the Elders.  The Elders then engaged them in questions about their faith and life--some of the toughest questions possible.  In the end, all nine confirmands were accepted into the membership of Westhampton Presbyterian Church with Confirmation Sunday to be Sunday, June 1st at the 10:00 am worship service.

September 2008

Worship on the Beach

Middle and high school youth went to Fire Island on Sunday, September 21st, to worship on the beach and tour the Sunken Forest.  A fun time was had by all exploring the beauties of nature.

Middle School Mission Project – Sunday, September 28th

Middle school volunteer at the Westhampton Care Center on the last Sunday of each month.  We help with the Sunday afternoon recreation program by bringing residents to the dining room, assist residents as they play BINGO, and then return residents to their rooms.  Many of these people do not have visitors regularly and look forward to having us share the love of Jesus with them!  

Youth Ministry Family Pot Luck Supper starts off Fall Activity Schedule

Youth Group members and their parents attended the Youth Group Family Pot Luck Supper Sunday, September 14th in Bailey Hall as the fall schedule of activities was presented by Youth Ministry Coordinator Pat Hubbard.  We welcomed the new sixth graders and their families!  A mailing went out following the meeting to those not attending the event with information on the fall's activities and permission slips for special events.

Youth REACH WorkCampers and Advisors Strike Pose Prior to Departure to Oceana, West Virginia

Here are the Youth REACH WorkCampers at 5:30 am Friday, July 11th, just before they departed by our church bus for Oceana, West Virginia, to assist in mission work to help rebuild, paint and rehabilitate houses for senior citizens, the disabled, and the poor.  All have just completed making their lunch sandwiches from an assembly line in Parish Hall and have loaded their tool boxes aboard ready to work!  Our prayers are with them as they travel and work!  They will return on Saturday, July 19th.  [Thanks to Denis Yuen for the photo!]

Trip to Splish Splash

Middle school and high school youth are invited to go to Splish Splash on Saturday, August 16, 2008.  Meet at the church at 8:30am.  Bring $30.00 for admission and lunch. We will return to the church at 6:30pm.  Sign up today on the Youth Ministry bulletin board in the Parish Hall.

 Special thanks to Kyle Miller for volunteering to be the third adult chaperone for the REACH Workcamp mission trip this summer.  We are proud of the fact that Kyle “grew up” in the Youth Ministry program and now “returns” in a leadership capacity.  Welcome aboard Kyle!

Montauk Youth Group Coffee House

Our youth helped the Montauk Presbyterian Church Youth Group raise money for Heifer International by attending a coffee house they hosted: “Feed the Need” on Wednesday, July 23.  They also enjoyed some time on the beach before the early evening event!

 Youth Ministry Auction held Friday--May 16th and Raises $2,300 for Mission Trip

The Youth Mission Auction was held at the church on Friday, May 16^th with the doors opening at 7:00pm and the drawing  at 8:00pm.  Thanks to everyone who supported the Youth Ministry Auction by donating prizes and those who came to bid on the gifts. We made $2330 that will help offset the cost of taking 15 youth and 3 adults to Oceana , West Virginia.

Confirmation Class and their Mentors at Quogue Wildlife Sanctuary...

We are looking forward to Confirmation Sunday on Sunday, June 1^st.  The confirmation class and their mentors recently participated in team building exercises at the Quogue Wildlife Sanctuary in April.  As part of their commitment to mission, confirmands also helped assemble the college care packages for our alumni away at school.  Just a reminder, the confirmation class meets with the Session for dinner and to share their Affirmations of Faith on Tuesday, May 13^th at 6pm.

Sunday... Mission and Bowling...

Sunday, April 27, 2008, the Middle School Youth Group helped with recreation at the Westhampton Care Center as their on-going mission project.  Then the Middle and High School Youth Groups went Bowling at Westhampton Bowl.

Project Homecoming--- New Orleans Mission Trip...

Please pray for the 27 Youth and 10 adults from our church, Middle Island and Southampton who will be spending the April spring break working on three houses in New Orleans .  The following people represented our church:  Michael Baird, Meigan Yuen, Cynthia and Karen Diers , CJ Andrews, Hector Perez, Joanna DeLeon, Tim Dayton,  Gregory Campos, CJ Andrews, Nicole Maccagli, and Sara Lohneiss. Cassie Dayton and Kyle Miller served as Youth Advisors.  Adult Advisors included Pat and Gordon Hubbard and Linni Deihl .  Our sincere thanks to everyone who helped make this trip possible.  We are planning a program to share our experiences with the congregation.

 College Care Packages mailed...

College Care packages have been mailed to the following college students:  Jenna and Alyssa Klepper , Kevin Pearson, Jared Frenzel-Sulyok, Jill Borenstein, Brooks Surgan and Heather and Hunter Wootten. This year students received homemade baked goods, school supplies, snacks to give them energy to study for finals and a homemade card made by members of our Youth Groups.  Please let us know if your student received their care package!

 Middle School Retreat at Holmes Presbyterian Camp...

Seven middle school youth have registered to attend the Presbyterian Center and Camp at Holmes middle school retreat on May 4^th-6^th.  This retreat will gather middle school youth from many churches throughout our Presbytery.  We’re looking forward to spending the weekend at the camp with other Presbyterian youth and learning about our Lord. 

Youth Sunday is May 11th...

 Youth Sunday is scheduled for Sunday, May 11^th.   Please plan to come to church to support our youth as they take on the leadership of the entire worship service.  Please remember that any youth participating in Youth Sunday must attend practice.  We will have pizza and then practice for Youth Sunday on Saturday, May 10^th at 5pm at the church.

Youth Mission Auction is Friday, May 16th...

The Youth Mission Auction will be held at the church on Friday, May 16^th.  Doors open at 7:00pm, drawing begins at 8:00pm.  We are looking for donations of new items and/or services for the auction.  Think about what you could contribute, Paul Pfaff gives us a piano tuning and Jane Otis gives us her homemade cookies for this auction.  Please plan to attend.  It is a fun evening out that helps the Youth Ministry Committee to raise important funds to help offset the cost of taking our youth to the REACH Workcamp in Oceana , West Virginia , this summer.  We need youth and adult volunteers to help set-up for this event on Thursday, May 16^th at 6pm.  See Pat or Gordon Hubbard if you can help.

Fajita Nite – New Moon Café, East Quogue-Sunday, March 9,  2008

Many enjoyed a complete chicken or beef fajita dinner at New Moon Café on Sunday, March 9^th!  The proceeds from this dinner support the youth mission trips to New Orleans and Oceana, West Virginia. 

Holly Moses Pie and Cheesecake Sale –February 24^th -March 9^th 

The Youth Ministry Program sold Holly Moses pies and cheesecakes just in time for your Easter dinner!   The funds raised through this sale will support the youth mission trips this spring and summer.

Midnight Run

Twelve youth and three adults gathered at the church on Friday, February 8^th to make sandwiches, prepare soup, and organize clothing and sock donations before leaving to help the homeless in New York City.  We are especially grateful to Joan Hubbard who helped us connect with the Wigwam sock company.  Their donation of more than 1,000 socks made it possible for us to give each homeless man and woman several pairs of warm socks, in addition to a warm cup of soup and bag dinner.  Pastor Peter helped with the preparations and then went on the trip.  Everyone loved having him participate in this youth ministry mission project.  On Sunday, leftover bag lunches were given to Maureen’s Haven and delivered to St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Port Jefferson to be distributed to guests who came to have lunch in their Sunday soup kitchen.

Confirmation Class News

Nine eighth graders are participating in Confirmation classes this spring.  We held a breakfast for members of the Confirmation Class and their mentors on Sunday, February 10^th.  Thanks to all the members of the congregation who volunteered to mentor a youth as part of the Confirmation experience.  The Confirmation Class retreat will take place at Camp DeWolfe in Wading River on Saturday, March 1^st and Sunday, March 2^nd.   We will meet at the church at 9am on Saturday and return to the church on Sunday at noon. Several members of the class have already completed their mission projects.  Megan Speer helped to feed the homeless in a recent Maureen’s Haven program at our church.  Mara Terchunian helped with Midnight Run.

Project Homecoming – New Orleans, Louisiana

We are very busy planning for our mission trip to New Orleans.  There are thirty teens and seven adults making the journey to New Orleans to work with Presbyterian Disaster Relief to rebuild three homes damaged in Hurricane Katrina.  We held a planning session on Sunday, February 10^th, where we reviewed the itinerary and code of conduct and played some get acquainted games to help the youth and adults from Westhampton, Middle Island, and Southampton Presbyterian churches become a team.  The next planning session will be held Sunday, April 6^th at 4pm in Bailey Hall.  We will be leaving the church on Saturday, April 19^th at 5:30am.  Everyone is welcome to come and prayer with us before we go.

Trip to Fifth Avenue Presbyterian Church

On Palm Sunday, March 16^th, the youth groups are traveling to New York City to worship at the Fifth Ave. Presbyterian church.  We will leave the church parking lot at 7am.  Permission slips for this trip are in the Youth Ministry bins located next to the Youth Ministry bulletin board in the Parish Hall.

Attention 8th Graders!

It is time to begin thinking about confirmation!  You are eligible to consider joining the church. 

Come and learn about what it means to be confirmed at a luncheon for you and your families on Sunday, December 16th at 11:30 am.  Pastor Peter and Pat Hubbard will explain the confirmation process, requirements, schedule and enjoy lunch together.

Classes begin on Sunday, January 27th at 8:30 am.  Watch your mailbox for your invitation to come to the luncheon.  Older youth who have not yet experienced the confirmation process are invited as well.

Looking ahead to the Spring...

New Orleans Youth Mission Work Trip in 2008...

We have already begun to work with the Presbyterian Disaster Relief program in New Orleans to plan for a spring mission trip to that city.

This Youth Mission Trip will be going in April, 2008.  The Parkway Presbyterian Church in Metairie will be our home for the week.  We will refurbish a home damaged by Hurricane Katrina during our visit.  We need to raise funds to help offset the cost of this experience so we are planning a car wash on Sunday, September 22nd, from 8:00 am--1:00 pm.  We are looking for a place in the community to hold this activity.  Anyone with connections with a business that might allow us to use their parking lot and water for this event is encouraged to talk to Pat Hubbard: 288-6807.

This is an exciting opportunity for 8^th-12^th grade teens!  Let us know if you are interested in going with us!

Youth News from the recent past...

Here are some of the recent January Youth Group Highlights

Confirmation Class Orientation and Dinner was on Sunday, January 6^th, at 5:30 pm.  All Eighth Graders (and older youth who have not yet been confirmed) and their parents/families were invited to learn about the confirmation process.

French Toast Fundraiser was held on Sunday, January 13^th.  Participants in this year’s New Orleans and/or REACH mission trips attended and assisted with the event.

The 12^th Annual Ski and Snowboard Trip was January 19-21, 2008.  This trip was a great deal of fun and had some pretty cool spiritual opportunities!

Youth Bring Meals on Heals to Many in Need in New York City...

Meals on Heals was a moving and invigorating experience on Saturday, December 8th, as the Youth Groups traveled to the Fifth Avenue Presbyterian Church in Manhattan to help prepare and deliver meals to people unable to shop for and prepare their own meals.  Following this mission project, the "volunteers" had lunch at their favorite NYC restaurant... Carmine's!

Youth lead Church in Christmas Caroling...

An all Church Christmas Caroling Party was held Sunday, December 16th, when youth took the lead in singing Christmas Carol to home-bound members and concluded the evening with a soup party.

Youth Group Progressive Dinner well attended...

A Youth Group Christmas Progressive Dinner was held Sunday, January 23rd.  Lots of food and delicious Christmas desserts were enjoyed by youth from both groups.  The "Manse" was the first stop for the youth as they had appetizers; then, it was off to the Bairds for the main course; and, it all ended at the Tureski's home with desserts.

Middle School Youth Mission Project Sunday, November 25th...

The Middle School Youth went to the Westhampton Care Center to assist the residents in playing games and in informal conversations. 

Youth workshop on diversity issues November 18th...

A special workshop on "From the Margins to the Core: The Moving Walkway of Diversity and Social Justice" was led by Kevin Pearson, graduate student at the State University of New York at Plattsburgh, working on a masters degree in Administration and Leadership.  He is also the Graduate Assistant to the Center for Diversity, Pluralism and Inclusion (CDPI) where he works closely with the campus community to promote and foster an atmosphere of acceptance concerning issues of diversity.  For those youth too young to remember, Kevin is Pat and Gordon's Hubbard's son.  It is an honor to have one of the youth who grew up in our congregation return to offer back to us some of the fruits of their education.

Thanksgiving canned food drive, Sunday, November 11th...

Both Middle and High School Youth Groups held a Thanksgiving Canned Food Drive at Waldbaums' and at King Kullen grocery stores, Sunday November 11th from 11:30 am--3:00 pm.  They collected some NINE Shopping Carts full of food from shoppers who brought out an extra can or box of food for the Thanksgiving baskets!  Way to go youth!

REACH presentation to be held at Harvest Dinner Thursday, November 8th...

Senior High Youth offered the congregation a wonderful and inspiring REACH presentation at the Annual Harvest Dinner on Thursday, November 8th.  Our thanks to them for their presentation and personal sharing.

Youth Groups baked Thanksgiving bread for Community Thanksgiving Baskets...

Can you smell fresh bread cooking?  Both youth groups met Sunday, November 4th, and baked Thanksgiving bread so the community Thanksgiving food baskets would have a "home-baked" item.

Family Night Pot-Luck Supper a tasty hit...

Parents and Middle School and High School youth enjoyed a Family Night Pot-Luck Supper Sunday, September 16th at 5:30 pm as they  kicked off the fall Youth Group Program and reviewed future activities and opportunities for the year!  If you missed this exciting event, pick up a copy of the fall youth program in the box near the youth Bulletin Board.

Session acts on Youth Ministry requests…

 At the September meeting of Session, the Session approved the following fundraisers of Youth Ministry to assist in raising monies for the two major mission work trips planned this year:

·        Youth Car Wash planned in September at Rummage Sale, Saturday, September 22nd, 2007

·        Holy Moses Pie Sale – November 4-November 13 (orders taken) –delivery November 18, 2007;

·        French Toast Breakfast—Sunday, January 13, 2008;

 Action was also taken by the Session to approve Youth Ministry participation in the following activities:

 ·        Ski Trip as part of the Presbyterian Youth Connection—January 18-21, 2008;

·        New Orleans Disaster Relief Saturday, April 19-Saturday, April 26, 2008

·        REACH Workcamp 2008—Friday, July 11, 2008-Sunday, July 20, 2008—Oceana, West Virginia;

Youth Church School Classes resume September 16th for fall...

Special thanks to Meg Baird and Lisa Finn, who have volunteered to teach our middle school and high school classes that will begin on Sunday, September 16th.  The curriculum to be used this year was selected by Spencer Baird at the Triennium this summer at Purdue University.

Youth Triennium delegation returns...

Spencer Baird and Pat Hubbard were part of the Long Island Presbytery delegation that went to the Youth Triennium at Purdue University in July.  Spencer and Pat participated in planning sessions to prepare for the trip.  They were commissioned at the June 5^th Presbytery meeting in East Hampton and were commissioned by our congregation on Sunday, July 15^th. 

Youth and Advisors have successful REACH Workcamp...

The REACH Workcampers arrived home from Gettysburg on Saturday, July 14^th.  We are thankful for the work of the following REACH Workcampers:  Karen Diers , CJ Andrews, Rob Tureski, Billy Finn, Spencer and Michael Baird, Julie and Alec Christ, Meigan Yuen, Cory Hubbard, Joanna DeLeon, Hector Perez, Kayley O’Brien , Victoria and Brian Fochtman, John Fochtman, Erin Johnson, Pat and Gordon Hubbard.

Once again on the Great Adventure Youth Trip, no one was lost!!!

Annual Great Adventure Trip – June 7^th

The Annual End of the Spring Youth Program season always includes a trip to Great Adventure. 

This year was no different!  The trip left early Saturday, June 7th in order for the youth to arrive at Great Adventure and be the first through the gates to be the first in line at their favorite rides.   They returned late in the evening following a day full of fun.  We give our thanks to Pat and Gordon for making this trip possible for the youth.
