Youth Web Page Is Major Source of Youth News:

Both to cut costs on paper mailings, but also to communicate more easily in the way most youth connect, the Youth Ministry Program will place more emphasis on the church web page to announce Youth Group activities and deadlines for mission work trips.  Youth and Parents are encouraged to check the Youth Group web page frequently for the latest in youth activities.

We are also utilizing youth and parent e-mails through a group list as well.  Please make sure the Church Office has you current e-mail, phone and cell phone numbers.  Remember to update the church list if you change your e-mail!

The Youth Bulletin Board in Parish Hall is another good source of information on youth activities.  Forms and the youth schedule are in the youth boxes on the wall.

Upcoming Youth Activities...

Check the Youth Bulletin Board for up-to-the-minute sign-up sheets and details on Youth Group activities.  Often, following worship, there is a youth table for discussion and sign-up for future events.  Drop by...

January 19, 2012

This Friday January 20th the Youth Group is having a lock in at the church at 7:00 until Saturday at 9 am. This is a great opportunity to hang out with friends and have some fun indoors during the coldest month of the year. Be ready to stay up late, sharing food, playing games, and just making the most of our time spent together. What you will need are the traditional sleepover items.  Please bring your own bedding and proper sleeping attire. We have air mattresses but you can bring your own if you would like.  We plan on having snacks all night and will be serving a full breakfast Saturday morning.  You might like to bring an appropriate movie, snack, or board game to share with everyone else.  We hope to see many of you on Friday. We're sure it will be a blast. Please let us know who will be attending so we can get a head count for food.

We are also gearing up for Reach and will need deposits for this years campers. Our Reach meeting is this Sunday at 5-6:30; dinner will be provided.

Looking forward to February we have our Souper Bowl soup drive and we also have a Midnight Run planned.

We are also in need of Acolytes for this Sunday!! We thank all of you who have been helping out with that.

Hope to see you all Friday!

Kyle and Jill

January 6, 2012   HAPPY NEW YEAR

Hey all!!

Hope everyone had a great Christmas and a Happy New Year!

Hope to see everyone this Sunday for the French toast breakfast, for a youth group fundraiser. We will need help cooking and preparing food, setting up, and breakdown of tables. If anyone would like to come a little earlier to help out that would be great too. I will also be making mini muffins or cupcakes Sat morning in East Quogue if anyone would like to come over for that they are welcome. Call and let us know. Kyle and I are excited to say we just got conformation on doing midnight run!! We were waiting to put out the remainder calendar for that date, which is Feb 18th. We have a few dates open on the calendar for different fundraisers we are still working out. We plan on doing a dinner at a restaurant for one and possibly an outdoor movie as well. Any other open dates we are up for suggestions for fun outings. We are excited for the events coming up, especially midnight run and the lock in. We will have lots of fun things going on during the lock in.

Sunday the 22nd we would like to get deposits for our reach meeting. REACH can not hold our spots unless we get them in. Please bring the deposits for Reach to the meeting. We need all 2012 Reach participants to attend. Parents are welcome, we will discuss payment, fundraising, and all the good stuff about Reach.

We also need youth to Acolyte Jan 22nd during service. We thank the youth who have consistently been helping us with that.

Hope to see you all soon,

Jill and Kyle

Hey guys!

This Sunday Mara Terchunian is presenting the children's message on our Heifer International mission. Heifer International is a program that gives us and our congregation an opportunity to provide a family or community in need with the gift of live stock that can help them be more self sufficient. Please help out by volunteering at the sign up table in the fellowship hall following service . Also  Sunday at 4 PM middle school and high school youths will meet for some fun making treats for Maureen's Haven on Monday. We are also still in need of Youth Acolytes for Christmas Day. Hope to see you all soon!

God bless,

Kyle and Jill

Hey Guys!

We are excited for caroling this weekend! I will be making chicken soup and cookies on Friday for caroling. We will meet at the Church at 2:00 and jump on the bus to go caroling and give out cookies. Following caroling we will go back to Church to eat. If anyone would like to meet at my house in East Quogue on Friday early evening to make soup and cookie you are welcome.

We have a few dates on the calendar blank (SEE BELOW). We are still waiting to hear from the coordinators of Meals on Heels and Midnight run. We are planning to either depending on availability and how it would work with our calendar. As soon as we hear back will will let you guys know so we can get the rest of the calendar out to you!

We are so excited for the rest of the year!

See you this Sunday,

 Jill and Kyle

As we have been working on our list for donations for the Chinese Auction, we are reminded of REACH which is in Kanawha County, West Virginia, July 1 - July 7 (Sr. High) . I know it seems so far from now but we need to start getting our deposits in to hold our spots. Please send us a response email so we know who to keep on our REACH email list. If we could get the deposits in by Sunday Jan 8th, we would like to send them out that week to REACH. If you are unsure about attending you can always add a deposit later if there are spots still open. Also a reminder that if you are planning on going to REACH you are expected to help out with the REACH fundraisers. Nancy has donation forms in the office that we can use to hand out to ask for donations or gift certificates for the Chinese Auction. Kyle and I will be working on donations soon, we would like to get as many donations possible this year to make REACH affordable for everyone.

REACH 2011

REACH participants stopped for a weekend visit with former youth leaders Pat and Gordon Hubbard on their way to Cairo, NY. A fabulous time was had by all, as attested to by Gordon's email.

Chuck -

We had a great weekend with the REACH group.  Cassie and Kyle have matured into dynamite leaders and the youth were wonderful!!

It was incredible to house 14 people in our new home.  A lot of air matresses!

We had a fun filled weekend.   Friday night we took the group down through Cold Spring with dinner at Cold Spring Pizza and visit to the Hudson.  Saturday was geocaching in the Hudson Highlands park and an afternoon at Splashdown, a local water park.  Sunday we went to First Presbyterian Church in Philipstown.  They were so impressed with the WPC youth.

A Meditation by Lydia Frenzel Sulyok

iCan because iBelieve; we Can because we Believe

Youth Sunday Sermon –May, 22, 2011

When I see a group of children and youth working together, cleaning out an old church; making a French Toast Breakfast for the congregation to enjoy as they socialize and support the youth group; or packing boxes, for our colleges students, of pencils, paper, and brownies baked with love; I can’t help but feel what a wonderful community we live in.

When I see groups of students banding together, supporting programs at school that they care about enough to organize and see to it that they aren’t cut from the budget; or individuals raising thousands of dollars for charities that they’re most compassionate about, by holding dances and 5k’s; or watch commercials about supporting those who can’t support themselves; I can’t help but feel what a powerful nation we live in.

When I flip on the television or open up a newspaper, and see images of people gathering together, from all stages in life and from all over the world, to help those victims of earthquakes, tsunamis, tornadoes, hurricanes, and floods, I can’t help but feel what an astonishing world we live in.

When I work at the food pantry every Monday, stocking shelves of food, filling coat racks, helping families bring food to their cars, and catching up with their most recent events, I can’t help but feel God’s overwhelming love, which surrounds us, like a heavy blanket that enraptures our hearts, and minds, and souls.

I know that when we come together, supporting children in our country and in the world who are hungry, without a home, and without schoolbooks, we are doing so in the name of Jesus, expanding our roles as Disciples of the Lord.

My faith in the Holy Trinity and my trust in the goodness of the people in our world give me reason to believe in the greatness of our community, our America, our international efforts, and our world.  And we Can because we Believe.

And now I want you all to sit back, close your eyes, and take in a deep breath.  Ready?

Imagine yourself to be a falling raindrop.

Are you one that hopes to leave Mother Cloud, to careen and cavort during the exhilarating descent, above an open and roaring, glorious sea?

Are you one that hopes to waft across a beautiful, open cornfield, caught in a swirling gust from Father Wind?  The one who seeks to land among the clear blue-green tufts of grass, surrounded, at last, by your Sister and Brother droplets?

Or the one who lands atop a swaying stalk of sunshine’s teeth, poised and ready to swerve and slide, nourishing fruitful life?

Or are you the more skeptical raindrop who, while forming, is carried away with those drops who don’t fall over such an expanse of contrast and drama—whose lives are quickly spent falling straight down, never to be picked up by the wind, never experiencing the pull toward life’s marvelous beauty?

Are you thickly bogged down in massive issues, so much so that you become unable to envision a better life?

Be careful: you might touch down on the rough surface of some forgotten area of a blackened, polluted city.  Or freeze during the journey, solidifying the fact that you may never stretch and envelope something living and green, but will instead crash-land upon the unforgiving earth, shattering into thousands of tiny pieces.  Now sprawling and gasping on the frozen ground, any previous hopes that remain in the minds of the romantic drops (that may have once resonated through your obstinate mind) have now dispersed, and are lost forever from yours.

In that last nanosecond of life, do you congratulate yourself for knowing ahead of time that this was probably what would have happened anyway?

I would like to believe myself, as I’m sure much of you would also like to believe yourselves, counted among the idealistic droplets, who imagine rushing amongst the air particles—whose exhilaration ignites as swiftly as it flutters, dipping and twirling with arms out-stretched wide, ready to whistle and greet the next current, like the double-winged maple tree helicopter seeds—all with as much whimsy as purpose.

Like these water droplets and winged seeds, I see myself spreading the Good Words and creating a world in which peace, love, and justice rule.  I often dream that the seeds of good that reside within the heart of the creation triumph over the wicked, bringing amity and well being over the face of the globe.

I want to believe that, as life changes with every new gust of wind that rattles a corn stalk back and forth, so can people’s views and biases change of one another.

I am a romantic, but not without reason, and it is, in many ways, clear to me that I often have need to be brought back to the cloud. Brought back to where thoughts are formed, creativity is crafted, and people decide when and if they will act with the goodness of all in mind.

I believe in the glorious extent of impact one person can have, who’s everlasting Words have ruled for millennia, as will they continue.

I also realize that we must come together and work as one to create a world in which no one is hungry or lives in fear.

And I can believe these things, as you can as well, because we know of and experience the power of God, Jesus, and of the Holy Spirit.  We don’t have to be that raindrop who falls straight down, never being lifted by the joy of our faith and of the Holy Spirit.  And for this, we must rejoice in what we have!  And share this wonderful news with those around us.

Miracles can, and indeed do, happen every single day.

One man’s horrendous past history would justly allow him to never leave his home.  There seems to be no reason for this kind-hearted person to be who he is today, as I know him—strong and optimistic, compassionate and enthusiastic, filled with relentless faith and ceaseless will to do good and help those in need.

But, despite my realist assumptions, there he stands, in the midst of a crowd (during last year’s town Christmas parade) cheering and supporting everyone as they parade on by.

All that will remain of this man in his daughter will be his free will and steady, hopeful spirit.

He and those like him create miracles everywhere they turn—dusting them off their shoulders.  These sparkling crystals craft a silky curtain of glittering raindrops that renews hope in all it envelops; and onlookers watch as a hint of a smile dances across his lined face, crafting new creases on such a crinkled soul.

Looking up to night sky, illuminated by stars fiery with passion and the twinkling lights of the parade, I exhale a long, deep breath, blowing it to the brisk, wintry air, imagining that if Jesus were there, he’d do the same.

Out pours a shimmering halo that reflects the light ever so perfectly—formed from the water droplets from inside of me.

This radiance, like an everlastingly enlarging ripple, expands ever wider, shrouding all the joyful, angelic little toddlers in a sheath of beaded water, their angel wings flapping as their spirits excitedly flit about.

These droplets, as they crystallize around the whole community that gathered together for that one night, laughing and rejoicing as one body, seal the value and hope that is our romanticism and faith.

These spritely little droplets dance together, just as the good of the world is expressed from that one little breath of God.  They truly are life’s inspiration.

God of Grace,

Allow us to open ourselves to relaxation and peace, to experience you and your all-empowering love in new and diverse ways.  Give us the courage to open our hearts, and our minds, and our bodies, and our souls, and give them to you; for you to have and hold us, and to love us, and to keep us, as we are your children and seek to do your work, which we can do, because we believe.  Amen.

****************************************************************************************************************************************************************************************

Easter Sunday the youth are asked to help hide eggs for the Easter Egg Hunt directly following church (10am). We will be hiding eggs at 8:30am, as church service begins at 9:00am. Some of the youth have said they want to help. This request comes to us from the children's ministry and I would love to help out as much as we can. If you are planning on attending the 9am service and would like to offer your hand, could you send me a quick rsvp e-mail? Thanks!

Auction: We have a lot of items and big ticket items already, but could use more. Please spend time next week, if you haven't yet, soliciting donations, looking through things in your house, and reaching out to relatives/friends. Possible suggestions: "Little girl basket - books, cd's, dolls," "Old action figure basket," "old gaming system basket," and of course, gift certificates.

Important: All basket items must be in by Monday, April 25. The church is open until 4:00pm.

Basket coordination dates:

Monday, April 25, 11:00am (Not sure if anyone has off, but I do and will be at the church. Let me know if you are able to help!)

Wednesday. April 27 5:30pm - 7:30pm

Thursday, April 28 (times TBA)

Friday, Auction!!!!! Meet at church 4:30pm, doors open at 6:00pm

All youth attending REACH and their parents are expected to help with the auction. If the dates and times do not work for you, please let me know asap and we will arrange other means of help.

-->On to the next one...NEW REACH Fundraiser titled "Peel&Save" Cards

Cards are $10 each, There are 4 cards in one! Here's the best part...we keep $5 from each card.

They are Mcdonalds saving cards (perfect for the summer time).

You essentially "peel" as you go, which is why there are 4 cards for $10. You really end up saving way more than $10.

IMPORTANT: ALL REACH PARTICIPANTS MUST SELL AT LEAST 10 CARDS EACH.

The sale goes until May 6. I realize this is a lot at once with the auction, but I know with the holidays and being off school, its easier to sell to family, friends, and teachers (once you get back).

-->I will have your name attached to a packet of cards in the church office starting Today (Friday)

Feel free to pick up extra cards, but you are only required to sell 10.

This is a very busy time of year for all of us, so I appreciate all of the help and support. This is our "push" time of year. Please let me know what you will be helping with (especially REACH participants) and I look forward to a productive, fun, and exciting Spring.

I will be away next week, but can be reached my phone or e-mail with questions (631-804-9735).

Thanks so much!

Cassie

Looking back at the Recent Past...

January 2011:

What a fabulous time we had in NYC on January 16th. We definitely had our fair share of laughs and some great bonding times (MASH POTATOES!!!!! haha). I want to thank EVERYONE who helped orchestrate this event...parents for all of your support and youth for making me proud every second of the trip. How cool was meeting the lead Andrew?!?! And having him meet us down by the stage!!! We certainly were very lucky.

On January 30th, we shared pizza at a pizza making party at Rev. Cary's house!

Youth & Family BBQ Kick-Off Celebration Starts Youth Ministry 2010-2011

Friday, September 17, 2010 Youth Ministry Coordinator Cassie Dayton greeted youth and their families with "Happy September!" as the Kick-off celebration for Youth Ministry was held from 6:30-8:00 PM.  Youth and their families enjoyed BBQ-ing.  A plethora of burgers, hot-dogs, salads, drinks and desserts were enjoyed.  Families came and relaxed together as the youth renewed friendships and made new ones.  The sixth graders were welcomed to the Middle School Youth Group and the High School Youth group looks forward to their "lounge" being prepared in the upstairs of the West Wing!  The fall 2010 schedule for Youth Ministry as well as important dates for the Spring were distributed and parents signed up to assist with activities.  All are looking forward to an exciting new year!

Sunday, September 19, 2010 all youth brought in home baked cookies as their contribution to the farewell reception for Pastor Peter following worship where he preached for the last time.

Sunday, September 19th, 2010 the following youth were recognized and/or installed as youth church officers during worship.  We welcome Lydia Frenzel-Sulyok (ordained and installed as Elder); CJ Andrews (installed as a Deacon, having previously been ordained); and, Mara Terchunian (recognized as a Youth Advisory Trustee).  We are thankful for the commitment they have made in serving as leaders in the church.  Welcome to this ministry!

Fright-Fest / Lock-In with “Spooky Walk” Was Lots of Fun!!

The Fright-Fest/Lock-In for all youth was held Saturday, October 24th!  They met in Bailey Hall at 5:00 pm for Pizza, went to the “Spooky Walk” at Camp Paquatuck in Center Moriches, returned to church 9:30 PM for a frightful evening of activities at the church.

Youth Walk in Annual CROP Walk...

Youth walked to raise money to fight hunger!  The one thing that was different this year from other years is the CROP Walk did not go through lovely Quiogue and Westhampton Beach on a beautiful Sunday afternoon!  It rained; we walked around the sanctuary, through Parish Hall, down through Bailey Hall and the Choir Room, back upstairs to the sanctuary and we did the circle two more times!  The annual CROP Walk, sponsored by the East End Presbyterian Parish in conjunction with other East End congregations was held on Sunday, October 18, immediately following worship and a lunch will follow in Parish Hall.  All funds collected are used to combat hunger abroad and in our community.

September 2009:

Welcome to Gail and Mark Klepper--Our New Youth Ministry Coordinators!!

Dear Middle and High School Youth and their Parents!

It is my great pleasure to announce that Gail and Mark Klepper have agreed to serve as Westhampton Presbyterian Church’s new Youth Coordinators working with the Session’s Youth Ministries.

At the Session Meeting Tuesday evening, Elder Hanna Manker reported for the Personnel Committee that Gail and Mark Klepper have agreed to serve in this important ministry to our youth and their families.  Mark and Gail are no strangers to our congregation—both have served as Elders as well as many other leadership roles.  Most recently, Gail served with Pastor Peter leading the Confirmation Class 2009.  Their two daughters—Jennifer, now teaching in San Diego and, Alyssa, in college—were active and gained much spiritually and personally from the Youth Ministry.  Gail and Mark both have a deep desire and commitment to ensure our Youth Ministries continues to nurture and challenge our youth with motivating activities.

Session is very excited Gail and Mark are stepping into this new leadership role and believes the whole congregation—and especially the youth—is blessed to have their leadership as we begin this year’s activities.

Please join me in welcoming Youth Coordinators Gail and Mark Klepper at the Youth Family Pot-Luck Barbeque this Sunday, September 20th, from 4:30-6:30 PM.  All middle and high school youth, with parents and family members are invited.  The main meal—hamburgers/veggie burgers/hot dogs—and beverages will be provided by the Youth Ministry.  Bring your calendar, and a side-dish or dessert to share!  We would like to have at least one parent present to hear what we talk about at the “family meeting.”

We will meet in Bailey Hall for this annual fall meeting of youth and parents to review/highlight planned youth events from September through January and adjust the schedule.  Mark and Gail look forward to the opportunity to discuss new ideas and talk about ways to ensure youth group is the best it can be for everyone!  We look forward to this year’s Youth Ministry Program under the leadership of new Youth Coordinators Gail and Mark Klepper.

July 2009:

REACH WORKCAMPERS Have Successful Summer!!!

While most of us were still sleeping in on Friday, July 3rd, REACH WorkCampers were up packing the Church Bus and the van and preparing to leave for Niagara Falls, NY, where they spent the 4th of July watching fireworks over the falls and then began their Mission Work Trip renovating and repairing homes for the elderly, persons with disabilities, and the poor in the Niagara Falls area.  Our appreciation and gratitude to them for sharing their life and offering a faith-filled journey as they demonstrated God’s love to the community around them.

Youth Go on Mission Trip to Niagara Falls—Our 11th REACH Trip

The 11th REACH Youth Mission Trip leaves the Westhampton Presbyterian Church parking lot at 5:30 AM on Friday, July 3rd for Niagara Falls, NY, and will return on Saturday, July 11th

Fifteen youth and four advisors—a total of 19—will participate this summer.  All were commissioned on Sunday, June 28th, during the 10:15 AM worship.

The fifteen youth include: Michael Baird, Gregory Campos, Kristina Carter, Julia Christ, Alec Christ, Joanna DeLeon, Gil Frevert, Elizabeth Moore, Kayley O’Brien, Hector Perez, Matthew Sulzinski, Mara Terchunian, Christian Tureski, Robert Tureski, and Meigan Yuen.  Four are attending this year for their first time.  The Leadership for the trip include Gordon and Pat Hubbard with Assistant leaders Jessica Czachur and Kyle Miller.

They will enjoy some group building time with some fun activities at Niagara Falls before beginning their “hard labor” as they join several hundred other youth in repairing roofs, building decks, painting houses, restoring rooms, and other construction projects and activities for the elderly, persons with disabilities, and the poor.  Each year they develop close relationships with the folks whose homes they repair as well as deepening relationships with each other and making new relationships with other participants.

June 2009:

Habitat for Humanity Workday took place on Saturday June 6th

The church is sponsoring a workday with Habitat on Saturday, June 6, 2009 right here in Westhampton. It was a great opportunity to warm up your carpentry skills (for those of you attending REACH this year).  More importantly, it was also a chance to show off your love for God and your community with an expression of peace through hands on involvement in YOUR neighborhood.

REACH Mission WorkCamp Commissioning took place on Sunday June 28th

Youth and leadership for the 11the Annual REACH Youth Mission WorkCamp were commissioned on Sunday, June 28th during the 10:15 AM worship.  The group will depart the WPC parking lot on July 3rd for Niagara Falls, NY, where they will renovate and repair homes for the elderly, persons with disabilities and the poor.  Prayer partners have been selected for each participant.

May 2009:

Confirmation Class 2009 Confirmed on the Day of Pentecost -- May 31st

The Confirmation Class 2009 met with the Session on Tuesday, May 12th, at the Session Confirmation Dinner and were examined and questioned for Church Membership.  The six youth presented their Personal Faith Statements and Session members gave them words of encouragement and experience.  On the Day of Pentecost--May 31st--our youth joined the church during the worship surrounded by red balloons and with a wonderful cake during the fellowship time.  Thanks to all who supported the youth on their faith journey to confirmation and who celebrated with them!

Pictured above are the Confirmation Class 2009, left to right: Matthew Sulzinski, Timothy Shea, Dineen O'Rourke, Taylor Jenkins, Elizabeth Moore, and, (after Mentor/Sponsor Russ Babis), Christian Tureski.  Their journey began with a Confirmation Discovery Breakfast held on Sunday, March 3rd  at 8:00 am in Bailey Hall where Pastor Peter and Gail Klepper explained the confirmation process, requirements, schedule and all enjoyed breakfast together.  Confirmation classes began on Sunday, March 8th with a Confirmation Retreat at Camp de Wolf on the theme "Discovering Whose We Are."  Classes and the final retreat at Holmes Presbyterian Camp and Conference Center May 1-3 on the them "Is God in Your Five?" continued until Confirmation Day, Sunday, May 31st, the Day of Pentecost!

This year the Session has appointed Mentor/Sponsors for each Confirmand.  The Mentor/Sponsor will be a sponsor and mentor to their Confirmand throughout the next year, developing a on-going relationship with the youth and being available for questions as well as encouraging the youth in their membership.  The following have been appointed by Session as the Mentor/Sponsors: Linni Deihl (Taylor Jenkins), Lise Frielinghaus (Elizabeth Moore), Holly Hubbard (Dineen O'Rourke), Matt Hoge (Timothy Shea), Corey Williams (Matthew Sulzinski), and Russ Babis (Christian Tureski).

Our congratulations and welcome to our newest members!
